Pip’s Sink or Float Day

Pip filled a big tub with water. "Today I am a scientist!" he said. "Let’s find out what sinks and what floats."

First, a rock. "I think it will sink," said Pip. Plop! The rock went down, down, down to the bottom. "I was right!"

Next, a feather. "Float!" guessed Pip. The feather sat on top of the water like a tiny boat.

Then Pip picked up a big red apple. "It’s big and heavy. It will sink!" Splash! The apple bobbed right back up and floated. "Whoa!" said Pip. "Surprise!"

Last, a little coin. "It’s so small. It will float," said Pip. Plink! The coin sank straight to the bottom.

"Big things don’t always sink, and small things don’t always float," said Pip. "You have to test it to find out!"

Pip wrote down everything he learned. Then he built a foil boat and floated it across the tub. Toot, toot!

Let's talk about it

  • What surprised Pip?
  • What do you think would happen to a leaf?
  • What can you test in your bathtub?
